Patent Infringer Spills Corn Oil

Even though they dumped it all over the road and down the sewer drain, they still owe Greenshift back royaltys. Karma?

"Thousands of gallons of corn oil spilled after the semitrailer it was loaded in overturned Friday morning at Front and Columbia streets near The Drake restaurant, injuring the driver.

Police said the driver, Thomas L. Pulliam, 38, of Monmouth, Ill., was exiting U.S. 34 eastbound onto Front Street at about 11:30 a.m.

As the semi entered the off ramp, Pulliam said his brakes failed, and he could not slow down to make the turn onto Columbia Street.

Front Street was shut down due to preparations being made for next week's Steamboat Days.

Pulliam told police he tried to down shift, but the semi did not slow down enough so he made a right turn onto Columbia Street.

It swerved wide left into the oncoming lanes of traffic and rolled onto its top.

As the semi rolled over, the tank valves sealing most its load of 8,500 gallons of corn oil from Big River Ethanol Plant in West Burlington spilled onto the roadway and ran down the curb and into the storm drains on Front Street.

Eric Walker, 25, of Burlington rushed to the driver's aid, pulling Pulliam from the cab.

"It sure looked like he lost his brakes," Walker said. "He was laying in there, so I helped him out."

Burlington fire crews and a Hazmat unit remained at the scene to clean up the spill. Crews were still cleaning it up late in the afternoon after the semi, owned by Kirkwood, Ill.-based Vallbracht Trucking, Inc., was towed away.

Pulliam was taken to Great River Medical Center in West Burlington for treatment of a laceration to the left side of his head.

He was cited for having illegal placards and failure to maintain control."
