Thanks to Norwoody on i-hub who found this article about the great long term interest GE has had in Biofuels. It is a local paper so its a good find - not likely to be picked up on the wire. It provides a frame of reference as to why GE would be willing to invest in GERS and its corn oil to biodiesel business plan. Click the link below for the whole article.
EVENDALE - GE Aviation engineer Mike Epstein will be more than an interested spectator this morning when Continental Airlines runs the first U.S. flight test of a commercial jetliner using a 50-50 biofuel blend in Houston.
The Continental Boeing 737-800, with two test pilots but no passengers, will be powered by two GE/Snecma-built CFM56 engines.
In the face of volatile oil prices, spiking at nearly $150 a barrel last year, and growing global pressure to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, GE Aviation is part of an industry push to develop and certify biofuels for commercial and military aviation.
GE Aviation has been actively working on alternative, environmentally friendly fuels. Its marine and industrial engines have used alternative fuels for several years, and its LM2500 engines for cruise ships have been using biodiesel since early 2006.
