meh. I think most of this corn oil is going more as a high energy additive to cattle feed and such right now anyway. That is the price floor I think for most of the industry, and it isn't bad actually I think. I don't need biodiesel to like GERS just fine.
There are huge obsticles to turn corn oil into ASTM biodiesel. Yield losses are extensive due to free fatty acid content between 10 and 15%. Stripping the free fatty acids is an immediate loss of that amount. Then conversion yield into biodiesel creates an additional loss due to waxes and sterols at 6%. In order to make ASTM grade biodiesel from corn oil, most manufacturers are using a distillation method that also produces around 6% additional losses so the economics are tight.
